The ubiquitous phong sphere.
Advantages to ray tracing - spectacular reflections, hard shadows are possible.
Disadvantages - no color bleed (notice no coloring of plane by the sphere even though it's quite reflective), no natural caustics (notice that there is no focusing of the light through the cylinder to the right, even though it's quite transmissive) Simulated caustics have been added to povray, and are shown in the cylinder to the left.
