by Dallin Dyer U3, cs 455 - Floaties in mug.

Strengths:

1. Has sharp shadows.
2. Good with complex scene

Weaknesses:

1. No Bleeding from the shinny surfaces: the blue doesn't bleed onto the orange ring (but does reflect in the cup)
2. Orange doesn't bleed onto the blue.
3. Any changes made while designing could only be seen (and their effects) by a complete re-render

Strengths
-Transparency - You can see the checkerboard in the transparent clear ball.
-Specular reflections - The checkerboard is reflected on the red ball.
-Hard shadows

Weakness
-Color bleeding - The transparent ball remains clear white even though it is right next to a red ball.

            by Tracen Peterson Pros:
Ray tracing is good for these spheres, shadows, and the effects of light such as the reflection of the wine glass on the white sphere.

Cons:
It took too long to render for such as simple image. There is also no color bleeding as you might expect from the red wine or the colored spheres

            by Daniel Miller Strengths:
+ Ray tracing simulates the blur effect of being very close to the silver pieces fairly realistically.
+ The spherical shapes have very realistic reflection and highlighting (e.g., pawn heads).
+ Note how the pieces are reflected in the board, and how well the gold pieces reflect objects in the scene.

Weaknesses:
- Notice how hard all the shadows are, even for the blurred silver pieces where the light source is obviously very bright.
- The color bleed from the green atmosphere onto the silver pieces is rather crude (e.g., notice the knight's neck, and the "neck stripes" on the rook pawn, rook, and king).
- The color bleed from the marble table onto the wood in the bottom left and right corners seems a little exaggerated - is wood really that reflective? If so, we should see the wood reflecting more of that green light, I think.
- The image took 3 minutes 25 seconds to render; not exactly a real time solution.

by jeff amelang The ubiquitous phong sphere.

Advantages to ray tracing - spectacular reflections, hard shadows are possible.

Disadvantages - no color bleed (notice no coloring of plane by the sphere even though it's quite reflective), no natural caustics (notice that there is no focusing of the light through the cylinder to the right, even though it's quite transmissive) Simulated caustics have been added to povray, and are shown in the cylinder to the left.

Demonstrates two weaknesses of Ray Tracing. 1) This relatively simple scene took over 21 minutes to render on a brand new state-of-the-art computer, which I feel is a bit long. 2) No color bleed; this can especially be seen around the golden-brown pillar in the middle where you would expect to see some gold-brown ambiently reflected by the base, and also anywhere there are sharply defined shadows instead of the warmly rounded ones you would expect in a bright scene.

NB: I just used one of the complicated pre-packaged scenes that came with POVRAY, I didn't create it. It just shows these weaknesses nicely so I thought I'd use it. Hopefully that's ok?
